Nine MusesProgram Note
“Nine Muses” is a set of miniatures for three solo instruments: flute, harp and violin. The movements take their names and characters from the nine Muses of Greek mythology. The Muses are goddesses who were thought to inspire the arts, and have often been referenced in Western art and literature as allegories and objects of rhetorical invocation (especially in epic poetry). Each movement is around one minute long and encapsulates just a few musical ideas and moods. These are the first fully realized solo instrument pieces that I've composed, and I used them to experiment with creating concise statements that are distinctive in character and maintain musical interest within a limited scope. |
