Burchfield,\u00a0<em>Wind Blown Asters<\/em>, 1951<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>My Master of Music graduating\u00a0recital at NYU will feature a full-length, staged workshop performance of\u00a0<em>The Coming of Spring<\/em>\u00a0and screenings of multimedia works.<em>The Coming of Spring<\/em>\u00a0is my\u00a0one-act monodrama for tenor, accompanied by flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano, based on the artworks and writings of visionary American painter\u00a0<strong>Charles E. Burchfield<\/strong>\u00a0(1893-1967), who was also the inspiration for my wind quintet\u00a0<em>Watercolors<\/em>. This is my largest compositional undertaking to date (ca. 36 minutes) and the overarching focus of my time at NYU.<\/p>\n<p>This workshop performance is being created by\u00a0a group of outstanding\u00a0professional\u00a0artists, including\u00a0conductor\u00a0<strong>David Rosenmeyer,\u00a0<\/strong>an advocate for opera and new music with companies and orchestras in the U.S. and abroad (notably as Associate Conductor of the Oratorio Society of New York);\u00a0stage director\u00a0<strong>Herschel Garfein<\/strong>, who is also\u00a0a composer and GRAMMY\u00ae award winning librettist; tenor<strong>\u00a0Tyler Lee,\u00a0<\/strong>who will portray Burchfield; and\u00a0<strong>The Chelsea Quintet,\u00a0<\/strong>which\u00a0gave wonderful performances of\u00a0<em>Watercolors<\/em>\u00a0at the Parrish Art Museum,\u00a0joined by pianist<strong>\u00a0Alice Hargrove<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rtokPkGBuaA\" target=\"_blank\">Watch the\u00a0video\u00a0trailer<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Listen to an excerpt\u00a0and learn more about the artists\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thecomingofspring.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.thecomingofspring.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1474953412723129\/\" target=\"_blank\">RSVP on Facebook<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><em>Also on this program:<\/em><\/div>\n<h2><em>Horizon: New York<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/4cb5cb83e61e2ff4c679fc7f1\/images\/screengrab.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" align=\"none\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>Horizon: New York<\/em>\u00a0is a\u00a0short film collaboration with two\u00a0extraordinary colleagues of mine at NYU: dancer-choreographer\u00a0<strong>Callie Lyons<\/strong>\u00a0and cellist<strong>\u00a0Fj\u00c3\u00b3la Evans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I originally composed the music for solo cello for performances at the Parrish Art Museum in November 2013. I departed from NYC on Amtrak&#8217;s Lakeshore Limited line and transferred to the California Zephyr in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The California Zephyr, which journeyed\u00a0westward via the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada, is a classic train famed for its scenic views. With a camera pointed at the window along the way, I attempted to capture the scenery&#8217;s transitions from farmland to mountains to desert.<\/p>\n<p><em>California Zephyr<\/em>, created for the New York University Contemporary Music Ensemble, summarizes my three-day journey on the Zephyr in eight minutes of music and video.
