Photo by Page 73.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I recently had the honor of participating as a guest artist in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.page73.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Page 73<\/a>&#8216;s week-long Summer Residency on the Yale campus in New Haven, CT, workshopping\u00a0a wonderful new play by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mashuqdeen.wixsite.com\/playwright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mashuq Mushtaq Deen<\/a> with\u00a0the all-star\u00a0team of director Jessi Hill and actors Moe Angelos, Isabel Arraiza, Maya Sharpe, and Jade Wu. We lived and worked alongside artists developing three other projects, sharing\u00a0readings of new work and exchanging ideas over\u00a0daily group\u00a0dinners.<\/p>\n<p>Mashuq Mushtaq Deen invited\u00a0me to collaborate on his play THE BETTERMENT SOCIETY\u00a0after we&#8217;d worked together in <a href=\"http:\/\/nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/reflection-on-new-dramatists-composer-librettist-studio\/\">New Dramatists&#8217; Composer-Librettist Studio<\/a>\u00a0last winter. We&#8217;ve written a song for voice and guitar that\u00a0is threaded throughout the structure of the play and creates\u00a0a musical-dramatic arc for one\u00a0the three women at the center of Deen&#8217;s narrative. The song\u00a0was previously workshopped as part of a reading with director Jessi Hill at New Dramatists, and will\u00a0receive further development on another reading in New York City this fall.
