Next month\u00a0the\u00a0Burchfield Penney Art Center\u00a0<\/strong>in Buffalo, NY presents a full concert of my opera and art songs\u00a0comparing the works of two iconic American artists: painter\u00a0Charles E. Burchfield\u00a0<\/strong>and poet\u00a0Walt Whitman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tenors\u00a0Joe Dan Harper\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Alexander Kosmowski\u00a0<\/strong>join\u00a0Matthew Marco,<\/strong>\u00a0pianist and Artistic Director of\u00a0Buffalo Opera Unlimited<\/strong>,\u00a0in this special event presented in conjunction with the Burchfield Penney Art Center\u2019s exhibition\u00a0Embracing Earth: Burchfield & Whitman.<\/em><\/p>\n

My musical interpretations of Whitman\u2019s\u00a0Poem of The Road<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Laws for Creations\u00a0<\/em>will be performed alongside the exclusive World Premiere of\u00a0Proofs of Coming Fullness,<\/em>\u00a0which is based on text from Whitman\u2019s memoir\u00a0Specimen Days.<\/em><\/p>\n

This will be followed by a staged production of my 2014 work\u00a0The Coming of Spring<\/em><\/a>:\u00a0<\/em>a one-man opera illuminating Burchfield\u2019s artistic evolution. In this work, a series of poignant chronological episodes reveal how perceptions of nature framed Burchfield\u2019s life experience: from days collecting insects during his rural Midwestern childhood to the years in which he supported his large family by producing popular images of industrial and suburban scenery in Buffalo.<\/p>\n

Burchfield\u2019s mission to develop the expressive power of his art\u2014and to convey the transition from winter to spring in a single image\u2014leads to a revelation in 1943 with the completion of the monumental titular painting.<\/p>\n

Originally scored for tenor with a six-piece chamber ensemble,\u00a0The Coming of Spring<\/em>\u00a0will be performed here in piano-vocal reduction.<\/p>\n
