For the next few months, I will be focusing on the development of Beyond the Notes<\/strong><\/em> (beyondthenotes.org<\/a>), a new kind of multimedia companion for arts events. Each “digital program note” on Beyond the Notes<\/em> will accompany an event, and may include video interviews, audio excerpts, slideshows, and other interactive features, which will be accessed by audience members on a website or in the concert hall (but not\u00a0during<\/em> the performance!) via a\u00a0mobile application supporting iPhone, iPad, and Android.<\/p>\n

By producing websites and mobile apps rich with interactivity and substantive content, I hope to inform and enhance audiences’ experiences of the performing arts and visual arts, and to facilitate communication between artists and their audiences.<\/p>\n

From now through September, I will be producing a pilot\u00a0Beyond the Notes<\/em> website and mobile app to complement a performance of my string quartet\u00a0The Course of Empire<\/a><\/strong>, <\/em>based on paintings by Thomas Cole<\/strong>,\u00a0at the\u00a0Peabody Essex Museum<\/a><\/strong> on July 30 in coordination with national touring exhibit\u00a0Painting the American Vision<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond the Notes<\/em> will also accompany\u00a0my recital at New England Conservatory in October, which will feature\u00a0The Course of Empire<\/em> and other\u00a0music inspired by visual artists including Charles Burchfield<\/strong> (Watercolors<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0The Sphinx and the Milky Way<\/a><\/em><\/strong>), Georgia O’Keeffe<\/strong> (The Faraway Nearby<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0From the Faraway Nearby<\/em> <\/a><\/strong>[orchestra piece],\u00a0and\u00a0To Create One’s Own World<\/a><\/em><\/strong>), Michelangelo<\/strong> (Revealed in Stone<\/a><\/em><\/strong>), and Hiroshige<\/strong> (Setsugekka<\/em><\/strong> – mp3s coming soon).<\/p>\n

I will be closely blogging<\/a><\/strong> and tweeting<\/a><\/strong> the production process for the\u00a0Beyond the Notes <\/em>pilot. My first exciting step: a\u00a0road trip this weekend to film an interview with Nancy Weekly<\/strong>,\u00a0leading Charles Burchfield scholar and Head of Collections and Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center<\/a><\/strong> in Buffalo, NY.<\/p>\n

I’ll also be heading to Catskill, NY to do research at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site<\/a><\/strong> and to film landscape footage in the region that inspired Cole’s monumental paintings. In June, I’ll be interviewing Linda S. Ferber<\/strong>, Senior Art Historian at the New-York Historical Society<\/a><\/strong>, an expert in Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School artists; as well as Carol Steen<\/a><\/strong>, artist and founder of the\u00a0American Synesthesia Association<\/a><\/strong>, for a segment on synesthesia<\/a> in art and music.<\/p>\n

The first\u00a0Beyond the Notes<\/em> website\/app is being funded in part by\u00a0an Entrepreneurial Grant<\/strong> from the Entrepreneurial Musicianship Department<\/a> <\/strong>at New England Conservatory. (My first Entrepreneurial Grant, awarded in summer 2010, supported the creation of The Faraway Nearby<\/a><\/em>, a multimedia video piece inspired by the New Mexico paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe.)<\/p>\n

This pilot project is an experimental vehicle towards developing a new model of media enhancement for music and arts events. If successful, I plan to start a service creating websites and apps for small arts organizations ranging from galleries to theater companies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
