Yesterday I visited the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.burchfieldnac.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Charles E. Burchfield Nature &amp; Art Center<\/a> <\/strong>in Gardenville, a community center and park on Buffalo creek. There I caught a glimpse of his former home and studio where he lived and painted from 1925 to his death in 1967 (a private home across the street from the park), and filmed and photographed woods and flowers that evoked some of the nature scenes in Burchfield&#8217;s paintings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100   \" title=\"Charles Burchfield, The Moth and the Thunderclap (1961)\" src=\"http:\/\/nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-moth-and-the-thunderclap1-794x600-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"Charles Burchfield, The Moth and the Thunderclap (1961)\" width=\"240\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-moth-and-the-thunderclap1-794x600-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-moth-and-the-thunderclap1-794x600.jpg 794w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Burchfield, The Moth and the Thunderclap (1961)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I continued onto the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.burchfieldpenney.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burchfield Penney Art Center<\/a> <\/strong>in Buffalo to visit the stimulating exhibit\u00a0<strong><em>Sensory Crossovers: Synesthesia in American Art<\/em><\/strong>, which &#8220;<em>provides an unprecedented opportunity to consider synesthesia through the work of some of the 20th century&#8217;s most significant artists, luminaries such as Charles E. Burchfield, Arthur Dove, Max Weber, Joseph Stella, Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe and Adolph Gottlieb.<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.burchfieldpenney.org\/?select=exhibitions&amp;data=exhibitions\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>) It was intriguing to see diverse works from both Modernists and later artists that dealt with the translation of music and sound into visual art. The exhibit features a number of wonderful works by Burchfield (including the bold\u00a0<em>The Moth and the Thunderclap<\/em>); excerpts from his sketchbooks on display document a language of abstract forms and symbols, through which he sought to express the music of Sibelius and Wagner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3003-e1306638974866.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98  \" title=\"Filming at the Burchfield Nature &amp; Art Center\" src=\"http:\/\/nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3003-e1306638974866-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Filming at the Burchfield Nature &amp; Art Center\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3003-e1306638974866-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nellshawcohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3003-e1306638974866-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filming at the Burchfield Nature &amp; Art Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After taking in the exhibit, I had the pleasure of filming an interview with\u00a0<strong>Nancy Weekly<\/strong>, longtime head curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, co-curator of <em>Sensory Crossovers<\/em>,\u00a0and author and editor of a number of essays and books on his work. (I recently enjoyed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Charles-Burchfield-Sacred-Woods\/dp\/0791417832\" target=\"_blank\">this book<\/a> by Weekly.) She was wonderfully generous with her time and expertise, and\u00a0spoke with me on a number of topics relating to Burchfield&#8217;s work, including the importance of music in his paintings; and the phenomenon of synesthesia in art.<\/p>\n<p>With this informative interview, I am hopeful that\u00a0<em>Beyond the Notes<\/em> will become a valuable and entertaining resource for anyone interested in exploring Burchfield&#8217;s art, especially visitors who may not have the motivation to seek out books on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow takes me to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomascole.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Thomas Cole National Historic Site<\/a><\/strong> in Catskill, NY, where I&#8217;ll be shifting my focus back into the 19th century and the monumental landscapes of the Hudson River School.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently on my first road trip shooting footage for\u00a0Beyond the Notes (see this post for a description of the project).
